When farmers begin planning their rabbit farms, they will need to formulate a plan, which will often need to be submitted to an agricultural or planning board in your area in which you wish to set up this venture.   Rabbit meat is very high in protein and low in fat. Being low in calories per weight, it's not ideal for sustaining hard labor, but it can definitely do in a pinch. Rabbits also have one of the most efficient feed-growth ratios, keeping feeding costs way down. You could get about 70 lbs of fryer meat a year out of each doe, and one buck can service 8-10 does. In addition to meat, rabbits also provide great nitrogen-rich fertilizer, and their pelts are very soft and supple.   Most rabbit farms have 2 litter pens per doe, a cage per buck, and a few other extra cages for raising replacement breeders. Compared with most other meat, such as beef, chicken, lamb and pork it is high in protein and low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. The meat is white, fine-grained, delicately flavored, nutritious, and appetizing and can be prepared in over 300 different ways ( USDA 1963 ).   cuniculture Small body size makes it easier to maintain and a small unit requires limited space.   Rabbit is a prolific breeder and can be bred at any time of the year.       Butchering: "Rabbits are the easiest animals to slaughter," says Pasternak . "Mother Nature designed them to die: They are at the bottom of the food chain; you don't have to pluck feathers; it's easy to twist their necks; and skinning them is really fast and easy."   Fryers are butchered between 8 to 12 weeks of age, weighing 4 to 5.5 pounds and should dress out at about 2 to 3 pounds (usually 50 60 percent). Rabbits over 5.5 pounds are considered roasters. The feed conversion per fryer is about 1 pound of meat per 4 pounds of feed.

    Factors affecting cuniculture in Nigeria   Cuniculture in Nigeria has not been without its setbacks, factors such as climate, disease, time and a host of others have had their turns in militating against the development of cuniculture in Nigeria. Over the years, it has been climate in one region of the country and a different factor in another. I have taken time in this post to briefly discuss the most common problems affecting rabbit production in Nigeria.  

Put in simple terms, breeding stock are the initial rabbits you will use to start a rabbit production project. This may consist of just a male and female rabbit or several females and few males depending on the scale of the project. Breeding stock or foundation stock is to me the most important factor to consider when going into rabbit production, the quality and quantity of which will determine to a large extent the profitability of the venture.   Checking for pregnancies in rabbits by feeling the stomach palpating a rabbit     Palpation is possible from 10 days and onwards after mating. Place the doe facing you on a table, a bench or the floor. Put both hands on the sides and a little under the belly, gently pressing them towards each other and upwards. Of course, you can feel a lot in the belly. Amongst others, right behind the left ribs you can feel the liver; all the way up in the abdomen on both sides and just under the spine, halfway back you will feel the kidneys.
