7 MUST KNOW RABBITRY MANAGEMENT OPERATIONS

Image
Rex Rabbit   Many things need to be taken into account with rabbit keeping: expenses for stable building, feed prices, purchase price of animals, etc. But let us not talk about bookkeeping although important! Most important from the management point of view is the registration of your animals: when they mate, when they kindle, who is their father or their mother, do they show disease, how fast do they grow, and so on and so on. In order to keep track of this information, proper administration is very useful.     In this post I am going to discuss the 7 most important management operations when it comes to rabbit farming.

Cuniculture in Nigeria

rabbit farming equipment     Rabbit farming, ( cuniculture ) is an undertaking in the agricultural industry, which is one of the biggest sectors of the economy. Rabbit farming in Nigeria has been growing because of its less requirements compared to other forms of livestock in relation to capital operating costs and maintenance yet they have high returns and high demand.   A rabbit is a burrowing animal, which has long ears and a tail. A male rabbit is called a buck, a female rabbit is called a doe and the children are known as kittens. They are usually reared for their meat, wool, fur, meat and even urine/manure. ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION IN RABBITS

artificial insemination   This is the method of introducing sperm into the vagina of the female animal by artificial means. The sperms are collected by using teasers .   Artificial insemination (AI) in rabbits can be a useful aid to colony management. In this review, simple non-invasive techniques for semen collection and AI are described.   Conception rates following AI can be equivalent to, or better than, those achieved by natural mating, with the added advantage that contact between animals is avoided. Ovulation can be induced reliably by the administration of a gonadotrophin releasing hormone analogue, buserelin , as an alternative to the use of a vasectomized buck or the injection of luteinizing hormone. The use of enzyme-linked immunoassay kits for progesterone assay can assist colony management by rapidly identifying non-pregnant animals for re-insemination. Frozen-thawed sperm have been inseminated but careful attention to the cryopreservat...

When recession hit my rabbit farm

Image
What is a recession? A recession is when the economy declines significantly for at least six months. That means there’s a drop in the following five economic indicators: real GDP (Gross Domestic Product), income, employment, manufacturing and retail sales. People often say a recession is when the GDP growth rate is negative for two consecutive quarters or more. But a recession can quietly begin before the quarterly gross domestic product reports are out. A recession is usually underway when there are several quarters of slowing but still positive growth. Often a quarter of negative growth will occur followed by positive growth for several quarters, and then another quarter of negative growth. When recession hit my rabbit farm On the evening of Aug 31, 2016 I was at a local restaurant near my apartment. A plate of pepper soup has just been placed in front of me when the voice from a television set announced that Nigeria was in a recession.

Rabbit farming in Nigeria

Rabbit farming in Nigeria is an undertaking in the agricultural industry which is one the biggest sector of the economy. Many youths ignore the Nigerian agricultural sector due to lack of support and encouragement from the Nigerian government and most especially the political class who in my view do not need empowered youths but rather educated and employable youths to till their empires. Thus, in Nigerian agricultural sector only some select smile to the bank while the primary producers remain in poverty with no whole hearted support whatsoever from the Nigerian government. Animal husbandry is usually differentiated depending on the type of animals one keeps since each animal has its own requirements. Rabbits have less requirements compare to other forms of livestock in relation to capital operating costs and maintenance. Quick returns and high demand are additional factors that place rabbit farming in Nigeria [PDF] on the profit side.       ...
