FROM MY EXPERIENCE WITH RABBITS

Golden rule

A golden rule:

When buying a mature rabbit ask the breeder what he majorly feed them and if possible let him show it to you, fetch or sell some . Continue with this feed.

Introduce new feed in minute quantity and keep reducing the quantity of the present while adding more of the new feed until the rabbits digestive system adjusts fully to tolerate the new feed.

Most rabbits can switch from one feed to another easily with no complications while some rabbits cannot.

Because of the complications that may arise from older rabbits adjusting to new feed and environment, it is important to chose younger rabbits [two months old] and start feeding them what is available to you from a very early age.

Common symptoms a rabbit is not responding well to its new feed or environment are:
  • watery poop [purging or diarrhea]
  • swollen stomach - you will have to feel the stomach. you will feel that the stomach has suddenly become large, and will make a hollow sound when tapped.
  • Refusing to eat or eating less.
  • Discontinue the new feed immediately and return to the old feed. Be sure to use drier feed until the situation returns to normal.
