How I fell in love with rabbits
Like every kid when I was one, I had always loved little creatures like guinea pigs, rabbits etc. I held them, played with them and fed them, and attempted to tame a wild (bush) rabbit at some point.
Growing
up, watching the community spring into a city, new lifestyles speedily erasing
and replacing the old ones, the drifting away from nature, and the inching
close to the end. Moving on, I took along with me the love of nature (love for
little creatures). I enjoyed the peace, joy and contentment having these cute
creatures brings. Aging further, I thought of doing something with this passion
for cute creatures; starting up a show, opening a park, a pet store or even ………….
“There is so much I can do with these creatures,” I told myself, but which will
suit my plan?
Gbam!
Rabbits – that is what crossed my mind. Rabbit huh! Okay, let us see – good human
companions, quiet and less noisy, clean and hygienic, can be litter trained,
used for show, etc., and the meat? Nutritious, tasty, healthy and in high
demand. I did some research on the value of the meat and found that:
- It is one of the best white meat available.
- The
meat has high percentage of easily digestible protein.
- Cholesterol and fat level in rabbit meat is much lower than chicken, turkey, beef, and pork. For this reason, rabbit meat has been used and is suitable for special diets such as those for heart disease patients, diets for the aged, low sodium diets, weight reduction diets, etc.
In
addition, I discovered the feeding is very cheap and that they are naturally
disease free animals.
With
all these and many more facts, I opted in for raising rabbits. I made up my
mind, got quality breeding stock from a trusted breeder and started breeding.
In addition, since then I must confess, keeping these little creatures has been so rewarding. It is more like a miracle that I have hundreds of them to watch, play with, earn money, eat some very good meat and to write about. Truly, a part of my heart goes to them for keeping me healthy.

I
joke at times saying if the country was to go into a recession, I will be
recession-proof.
I
want to use this medium to encourage others to draw close to nature. Plant a
tree or trees in your environment, adopt a bunny if there is a shelter close to
you or buy from respected breeders in your locality. Keeping them is rewarding.
Raise
what you eat. Know what you eat. It is key to good health.
